The Real Santa

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa. No, he doesn't drive a sled with 8 reindeer, or live at the North Pole. Santa is the men and women sitting behind the wheel of our country's 18-wheelers: delivering toys, food, gifts and more, to ensure a full and happy holiday season.

Regardless of your viewpoint on the holidays, or what your observance of them may be, millions will awake tomorrow to gifts under the tree and holiday feasts. Santa, the real Santa, will still be at work, driving forward and working to ensure the flow of goods around our country is constant.

Let's take a look at just a few quick statistics regarding trucking from the Federal Highway Administration:

  • In 2010 trucks hauled 12,490 million tons of freight, worth $ 10,515 billion.
  • In 2002, 5.5 million trucks drove 145.2 billion miles in the U.S.
  • Trucking provided 1.5 million jobs in the U.S. in 2007.
  • Each year, trucking companies and their drivers donate time, equipment and fuel to deliver gifts to those less fortunate through charities including Toys for Tots.

As you sit down with your family this holiday season, take a moment to remember the men and women who helped make it all possible. Remember those who are away from their families this holiday season so we can enjoy our ham, turkey and gifts under the tree.

Happy Holidays from the SpeedGauge team!
